Basically, if you are borrowing for the tuition fees anyway for almost all people it would make sense to take out the maintenance loans and bank them for the future. 13 June 2020 at 3:56PM sophia1803 Forumite 7 Posts

As such, in most cases, we'd argue it's best to take out both a Tuition Fee Loan and a Maintenance Loan, rather than one or the other (or neither). How is the Maintenance Loan paid? Maintenance Loans are paid straight into your student bank account in three (almost) equal instalments throughout the year – one at the beginning of each semester (other than in Scotland, where loans are paid monthly).

However once graduated they can, if paid enough, take out a loan with a much lower interest rate and pay it off if they want. So they dont necessarily have to have a fee loan for life. It's a very complicated calculation based on what you think they might earn and whether they would be better taking the maintenance loan and using it as a house deposit.

So paying off the fees if this happens would beat taking out a loan. Take out the maintenance loan, but pay fees upfront – SAVE £32,500. If you pay the tuition fees, but your child takes a maintenance loan, it would cost £35,800 in loan repayments, as well as £27,750 in upfront tuition fees.

I don't know much about ISA's but on other threads on here that i have read, people are saying it's wise to still take out a maintenance loan even if i dont need it and put it in an ISA account because you'll basically gain money from the interest rates they offer (but will this be more than the interest that the loan will accummulate, because as soon as i take out the maintenance loan the interest will start building up).

According to Finder, 47% of the consumers they surveyed took out a personal loan to cover bills or emergencies. Borrowing money to pay for things like medical bills, a flooded basement, or a dented car is never ideal, so I always recommend building up emergency savings first.
